FreshBuzzer on your phone

Everything the website does, plus notifications that reach you the moment something happens at your door - when an access code is used, when Auto Buzz lets someone in, and when your smart lock opens.

iPhone & iPad

The iOS app is in open beta through TestFlight while we finish up. It's the same app that will land in the App Store.

  • Requires Apple's free TestFlight app
  • Beta builds expire after 90 days - update from TestFlight when they do

Android

Download the app straight from us. No Play Store, no account, no tracking - and it keeps itself up to date.

Installing on Android

  1. 1 Tap Download APK above. Your browser will warn you that this kind of file can be harmful - that warning appears for every APK, including this one.
  2. 2 Open the downloaded file.
  3. 3 Android will ask whether your browser is allowed to install apps. Allow it, then come back and open the file again. You only ever do this once.
  4. 4 Tap Install. That's it - future updates are handled by the app itself.

Verifying the download

Optional, but it's your right to check. Compare the checksum of the file you downloaded against the SHA-256 above:

sha256sum freshbuzzer.apk

Why we hand out the Android app ourselves

Two companies decide which software you're allowed to run on a phone you paid for. We don't think that's how it should work, and where we have a choice, we take the other option.

On Android, we still have that choice. The FreshBuzzer app is a thin shell around the web app you already pay us for - putting it behind a store review queue and a revenue cut buys you nothing. It also means an app store can hold an update hostage. When something breaks in how your buzzer notifies you, we'd rather ship the fix today than wait for someone else to approve it.

On iPhone there is no other option, so the iOS app goes through Apple. That's rather the point.

Google has announced that apps installed on Android will eventually need to come from a verified developer, even outside the Play Store. We'll verify and keep distributing directly for as long as that remains possible.

Questions

Is downloading an APK safe?

The app is signed with our key, and Android refuses to install any build that isn't signed by us - including one that claims to be a FreshBuzzer update. We publish the SHA-256 of every release so you can confirm you got the file we built. The warning your browser shows is about APKs in general, not about this one.

Will it update itself?

Yes. The app checks for a new version once a day and updates itself. You don't need a store for that, and you don't need to come back to this page.

Why is Android a download but iOS is the App Store?

Because Apple doesn't allow anything else. The longer answer is above.

Do I need the app at all?

No. FreshBuzzer works in any mobile browser, and browsers can receive notifications too. The apps are there if you'd rather have an icon on your home screen and notifications that behave like every other app on your phone.
